Chapter Eight

Growing up as she had, Kara was anything but a narcissist. If anything, she was the complete opposite, since very little about her life since Colin’s death had been about her. So when Cam hadn’t come in last night to say good night, and when Faith announced over breakfast that he’d already eaten, Kara knew whatever was troubling him had nothing to do with her.

Part of that, of course, was the soul-searing kiss he’d given her yesterday before she and Faith had gone upstairs for their home spa night. Most of it, though, had to do with the sullen look on Ryker’s face as he ate and the not-so-subtle glares Gage kept aiming his way. Though she was dying of curiosity, it wasn’t her place to ask. So Kara ate quietly, but she did share enough glances with Faith to know the woman knew more than she did and she was prepared to share.

The porch door had barely slammed behind Gage and Ryker when Kara set the stack of dirty plates onto the counter. Looking out the window, she waited until the men came into view before turning to Faith.

“What happened? Ryker looked as though he could’ve chewed nails and if looks could kill, or at least maim, he’d be lying on the kitchen floor from Gage’s assault. And Cam’s truck is still here,” she said referring to the copper truck parked in front of the barn, “so it’s not as though he had to eat early to go somewhere. Why didn’t he eat with the rest of us?”

“Let’s talk while we clean up. I start a new part-time job today at the grocery store and I don’t want to be late.”

Kara frowned. “But I thought you did the cooking and cleaning around here?”

“I do. And I help outside when the men figure it isn’t too physical.” Though she rolled her eyes, her smile reassured Kara that she didn’t mind their protectiveness.

“Then why—?”

“It’s a long story,” Faith said. “But the short of it is that I’m used to earning my own way and I need to feel like I’m contributing.”

“But you already—”

Faith squeezed her arm. “It’s only until the baby comes. Then, next fall, I’m going back to college.”

“You’re going to college? After the baby?”

Faith’s smile was brighter than the morning sun warming Kara’s back.

“I am. I was going to go this fall but . . .” She rubbed the slight bump of her belly.

“Wow,” Kara said, amazed, and more than a little bit jealous. Faith had it all. A man who adored her, a baby on the way, and a career she wanted bad enough to pursue despite her other obligations. “You really will have your hands full.”

“I will,” Faith agreed. “But I’ve come to realize if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and all that.”

Kara supposed that was true, to a point. She’d recognized Keith wasn’t the man for her and, even if she’d done it in the most horrible way, she’d altered her course.
