Chapter Eight
Growing up as she had, Kara was anything but a narcissist. If anything, she was the complete opposite, since very little about her life since Colinâs death had been about her. So when Cam hadnât come in last night to say good night, and when Faith announced over breakfast that heâd already eaten, Kara knew whatever was troubling him had nothing to do with her.
Part of that, of course, was the soul-searing kiss heâd given her yesterday before she and Faith had gone upstairs for their home spa night. Most of it, though, had to do with the sullen look on Rykerâs face as he ate and the not-so-subtle glares Gage kept aiming his way. Though she was dying of curiosity, it wasnât her place to ask. So Kara ate quietly, but she did share enough glances with Faith to know the woman knew more than she did and she was prepared to share.
The porch door had barely slammed behind Gage and Ryker when Kara set the stack of dirty plates onto the counter. Looking out the window, she waited until the men came into view before turning to Faith.
âWhat happened? Ryker looked as though he couldâve chewed nails and if looks could kill, or at least maim, heâd be lying on the kitchen floor from Gageâs assault. And Camâs truck is still here,â she said referring to the copper truck parked in front of the barn, âso itâs not as though he had to eat early to go somewhere. Why didnât he eat with the rest of us?â
âLetâs talk while we clean up. I start a new part-time job today at the grocery store and I donât want to be late.â
Kara frowned. âBut I thought you did the cooking and cleaning around here?â
âI do. And I help outside when the men figure it isnât too physical.â Though she rolled her eyes, her smile reassured Kara that she didnât mind their protectiveness.
âThen whyâ?â
âItâs a long story,â Faith said. âBut the short of it is that Iâm used to earning my own way and I need to feel like Iâm contributing.â
âBut you alreadyââ
Faith squeezed her arm. âItâs only until the baby comes. Then, next fall, Iâm going back to college.â
âYouâre going to college? After the baby?â
Faithâs smile was brighter than the morning sun warming Karaâs back.
âI am. I was going to go this fall but . . .â She rubbed the slight bump of her belly.
âWow,â Kara said, amazed, and more than a little bit jealous. Faith had it all. A man who adored her, a baby on the way, and a career she wanted bad enough to pursue despite her other obligations. âYou really will have your hands full.â
âI will,â Faith agreed. âBut Iâve come to realize if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Where thereâs a will thereâs a way, and all that.â
Kara supposed that was true, to a point. Sheâd recognized Keith wasnât the man for her and, even if sheâd done it in the most horrible way, sheâd altered her course.
